Burbank’s Largest Solar and Battery Storage System Powers Up

Burbank Water and Power (BWP) has officially launched the city’s largest solar and battery storage system at the Regional Intermodal Transportation Center (RITC) adjacent to Hollywood Burbank Airport. This $17 million project marks a significant step toward Burbank’s goal of achieving 100% zero-carbon energy by 2040.

Project Overview

The installation features a 2-megawatt solar array paired with an 8-megawatt-hour lithium-ion battery storage system. Spanning approximately 174,000 square feet atop the RITC parking structure, the system comprises 4,260 American-made solar panels. The energy generated is sufficient to power about 585 homes, contributing substantially to the local energy grid.

Strategic Location and Benefits

Finding suitable locations for large-scale solar installations in densely populated areas like Burbank can be challenging. The RITC’s expansive rooftop provided an ideal solution, offering ample space and optimal sun exposure. The integrated battery storage system allows excess solar energy to be stored during peak sunlight hours and discharged during periods of high demand, enhancing grid reliability and reducing energy costs.

Collaborative Efforts

The project’s success is attributed to the collaboration between BWP, Hollywood Burbank Airport, the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority, and contractor Baker Electric. The competitive bidding process began in August 2023, with construction completed by April 2026. This partnership underscores the community’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

Community Impact

Burbank Mayor Tamala Takahashi expressed pride in the project, stating, “This project demonstrates Burbank’s commitment to a cleaner, more sustainable future for our residents.” The initiative not only advances environmental goals but also sets a precedent for future renewable energy projects within the city.

As Burbank continues to prioritize sustainability, the successful implementation of this solar and battery storage system serves as a model for other communities aiming to transition toward renewable energy sources.
